Conjurer for the Foul Fiend
If you've been enjoying the art in these last few Ace Comics posts then you're going to love today's satanic story from the Jan. '54 issue of Baffling Mysteries #19. So many great visual moments in this one, (and you leg lovers can thank me later too for a couple panels!) For more stories from this demonic issue check the THOIA Archives for "The Monster Maker" and "They Strangle By Night."

Take Me Out to the Ballgame...

This panel comes from Green Lantern #12 (April 1962). Of course, about 6 months earlier, Roger Maris (Ramis jumbled) had broken the record for homers in a season with 61, topping Babe Ruth's 1927 total of 60. Green Lantern's editor at the time was Julius Schwartz, who had grown up in the Bronx and was a die-hard fan of the NY Yankees.

Happy Birthday, Katy Keene and Mrs. Pappy
I've mentioned before in this blog that Mrs. Pappy does not like comic books, nor does she read them. Still, she remembers Katy Keene from her youth, and because Katy Keene is having a birthday, I thought I'd let them share the celebration.
Katy has her birthday in Suzie Comics #60, from 1947. Mrs. Pappy was born on this day in 19........errrrrrr, on second thought, maybe I'd be better off not saying.

Step into My Grave!
The November 1952 issue of Baffling Mysteries #11 has 4 great stories (I hope to post more from this issue later this summer), but "Step into My Grave!" is my favorite... you definitely can't go wrong with a haunted zombie tale containing a line like:
"Your living heart shall be torn from your tortured body before the eyes of your brother!"

"Your living heart shall be torn from your tortured body before the eyes of your brother!"

Fans of Larry Blamire's hilarious cult classic "The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra" will be pleased to know that you can now pre-order the long-awaited sequel "The Lost Skeleton Returns Again" on DVD from Amazon (click HERE!) And if that's not enough, you can also pre-order Larry's tribute to the old dark house murder mystery movie--- "Dark and Stormy Night" (click HERE!) Both films are available August 17th, 2010!
The Phantom - Ghost Who Walks #9(Moonstone)
In the aftermath of last issue, The Ghost Who Walks must pay a visit to some old friends. While the first provides helpful insight into the coming war, the second visit leads to the hunter becoming the hunted in the depths of the darkest house in all of Africa.

Shelf of Skulls
The title sounds like it's describing Karswell's office, doesn't it? This story, reprinted from Ajax-Farrell's Voodoo #1, is by Matt Baker. I scanned it from the black and white incarnation in the 1969 Terror Tales Volume 1 #8 (actually #2 in that weird way Eerie Publications numbered their magazines).
It's got Baker artwork, with some added ink shading and spurting blood (by editor Carl Burgos, maybe?) It's also got horror elements: the shrunken heads, a cheating wife, vengeful husband and a cigarette smoking skull. That's good enough for me!
Go back to Pappy's last Wednesday to see more Baker artwork on his great Canteen Kate feature from Fightin' Marines.
